Backpack Sprayer Not Building Pressure? Check These in Order

Before you open anything: if this sprayer has ever held a pesticide, herbicide or fungicide, the product label governs how it is rinsed, where the rinse water goes, and what protective equipment you wear while you do it. In the United States the label is not advice, it is the law, and it is specific to the product you used. Read it before you follow anything below. This page covers the mechanics of a sprayer. It does not tell you what to spray, how much, or how often, and no page should.

Then, before you unscrew a single fitting: release the pressure. A tank that will not spray is not necessarily a tank that is not pressurized, and a partly blocked wand can hold pressure behind it. Open the pressure release if the sprayer has one, or work the trigger with the wand pointed at the ground and away from you until nothing more comes out. Wear the gloves and eye protection the label specifies. A seal that lets go while you are looking at it is exactly the moment residue reaches your face.

With that done, here is the actual answer.

It is almost never the pump

You pump and pump and get a dribble, and the instinct is that the pump has worn out. On a sprayer that was working at the end of last season and is not working now, the pump assembly itself is one of the least likely causes, and it is the most expensive place to start.

What has usually happened is that a seal dried out, hardened or shrank while the sprayer sat in a shed all winter. Pressure in a backpack sprayer depends on a chain of small rubber parts holding a closed system: the lid gasket, the pump cylinder seal, one or two check valves, the seal where the hose meets the pump, and the seal inside the shut-off handle. Any single one of them failing means you are compressing air that quietly escapes somewhere else.

That is why the fix is usually cheap, and why the order below runs from free to expensive rather than from simple to complicated.

The five causes, in cost order

1. The lid is not sealing, or the vent is blocked. Free.

Take the lid off and look at the gasket. A lid gasket that is twisted, sitting proud of its groove, hardened, or missing entirely is the single most common cause, and it is invisible when the lid is on. Seat it properly and hand-tighten the lid squarely rather than at an angle.

While the lid is off, check the vent. Most tanks vent through the lid so that air can replace the liquid leaving. A vent blocked with dried residue produces the exact symptom this page is about, because the tank is fighting a vacuum and the pump is fighting the tank.

2. Residue in a check valve. Free, but messy.

A check valve is a small one-way valve, usually a ball or a flap on a seat, that stops what you just pumped from coming back. Dried product, grit, or a fragment of something that fell in the tank can hold one open. The symptom is characteristic: the handle feels light and gives almost no resistance, because you are pushing liquid back where it came from.

Find the valves in your manual, take them out, rinse them in clean water, look at the seat as well as the ball, and put them back the way they came out. Note the orientation before you remove anything. A check valve fitted backwards is a sprayer that will never build pressure.

3. Perished or shrunken seals and O-rings. Cheap.

Look at every O-ring in the chain: the pump cylinder, the hose fittings, the shut-off handle, the wand joint. A seal that has gone hard, shiny, flattened, or cracked has stopped sealing even if it looks intact in place.

Two rules here.

Replace like with like. Seal materials are chosen for what the sprayer is expected to hold, and some chemicals attack some rubbers. A generic O-ring from a drawer may fit and then swell, harden or dissolve. Order the manufacturer's kit for your model.

Do not lubricate with whatever is on the bench. Petroleum grease destroys some seal materials. Use what the manual specifies, and if the manual specifies nothing, use nothing.

4. A split hose or a failed trigger seal. Cheap to moderate.

Pressurize the tank as far as it will go and then look and listen along the hose, at both its ends, and around the shut-off handle. A hairline split flexes open under pressure and closes when you let go, which is why it is invisible on a bench. Wet the suspect area with a smear of soapy water and watch for bubbles if you cannot hear it.

5. The pump element itself. The expensive one, and the last one.

Only now is it worth suspecting the diaphragm or the piston cup. On a piston sprayer the cup wears against the cylinder wall; on a diaphragm sprayer the diaphragm eventually fatigues or splits. Both are replaceable parts on most quality sprayers and both are usually a service kit rather than a new sprayer.

If you get here and the tank itself is cracked, stop. A cracked tank on a sprayer that holds chemical is a replacement, not a repair. Nothing you glue to it is rated to hold pressure, and the failure mode is chemical against your back.

The habit that causes most of this

Here is the part that is worth more than the diagnostic list, because it prevents four of the five causes above.

A sprayer is damaged by what is left inside it, not by what is sprayed through it. Product left to dry in the tank, the hose, the valves and the nozzle is what blocks vents, cements check valves open, and hardens seals. The sprayer is not wearing out over the winter. It is curing.

The routine, done at the end of every use rather than at the end of the season:

  1. Follow the label's rinse instructions. Most product labels specify a rinse procedure, commonly rinsing the tank more than once and spraying the rinse water out through the system. The label also tells you where that rinse water may legally go, and that is not down a drain by default.
  2. Run the rinse through the whole system, not just around the tank. Whatever is in the hose, the shut-off and the nozzle is where the blockages form.
  3. Take the nozzle off and rinse it separately. Never clear a nozzle with a pin or a wire, which changes the orifice and therefore the pattern. Use water and a soft brush.
  4. Drain it completely and leave the lid off so it dries inside. A tank stored sealed and damp grows things.
  5. Store it out of sunlight, and out of the freeze. UV embrittles tank plastic over seasons. Water left anywhere in the pump and freezing is a cracked component in spring.
  6. Store it upright, and store it empty. Never store a sprayer with product in it, whatever the season, and never leave it pressurized.

Two things worth checking before you blame the sprayer

Are you pumping enough? A backpack sprayer holds a working pressure that drops as you spray, and most need a few strokes every so often to maintain it. If the pattern is strong and then fades, that is not a fault, that is the sprayer telling you to keep pumping.

Is the nozzle the problem rather than the pressure? A worn or partly blocked nozzle changes the pattern and the output and can read as weak pressure. Swap to a known-good nozzle before you take the pump apart. It takes thirty seconds and it settles the question.

Where this page stops

Never modify or defeat a pressure relief valve. It exists because a sealed tank you keep pumping is a pressure vessel. Removing it, blocking it, or replacing it with something not specified for the sprayer is the one modification with a genuinely dangerous failure mode.

Never substitute a part from another sprayer because it fits. Fitting is not rating.

If the sprayer has held a chemical and you cannot identify which one, do not open it up on a bench. Take the label question back to whoever used it last, or treat the sprayer as contaminated and dispose of it in line with your local regulations.
