It lights, it burns for a minute or two, a breeze comes through, and it goes out. Search for a fix and everything sold to you is a wind guard.
A wind guard solves one of the four causes, and it is not the most common one. Here they are in the order that costs least to check, with the safety rules that apply to all of them first.
Before you touch anything
If you smell gas at any point, stop. Close the valve at the tank, move away from the appliance, do not operate switches or lighters, and let the area clear. A persistent gas smell is a reason to have the appliance looked at rather than to keep trying.
Never relight a burner that has been running unlit. If gas has been flowing without a flame, close the valve and give it several minutes to disperse before attempting anything. A pool of unburned propane in a fire bowl ignites all at once.
Never modify the regulator, the hose, the orifice or the burner. These are gas components, they are sized and rated for the appliance, and altering any of them is not homeowner work. Everything in this article is either a check or a manufacturer-supplied part.
Do not use a fire pit in high wind at all, wind guard or not, and never leave one unattended.
Cause 1: the regulator has tripped its excess-flow protection
This is the most common cause and the cheapest to fix, and almost nothing sold to you addresses it.
The connector on a standard barbecue-style tank includes a safety device that limits flow if it detects a sudden surge. It is designed to protect you if a hose is severed. It also trips when you open the tank valve quickly while the appliance's own control is already open, which is exactly what people do.
The symptom is precisely what you describe: a small, weak flame that will not sustain, and which any breeze extinguishes. It looks like a wind problem. It is a supply problem.
The reset, which is in most manuals: turn everything off, disconnect the regulator from the tank, wait a short period, reconnect it, then open the tank valve slowly, fully, and only then open the appliance control and light it. Follow your own manual's wording rather than this description if the two differ.

Cause 2: the tank is low, or it is cold
Propane has to vaporize inside the cylinder to reach the burner. Vaporization draws heat from the tank, so a nearly empty cylinder, a cold evening, or both, reduces the pressure available.
The signature is a fire that starts acceptably and fades over the evening, or one that is fine in September and feeble in November. Weigh the tank: the empty weight is stamped on the collar, and a bathroom scale tells you what is actually left.
A second, full tank on a cold night resolves this immediately, and it also tells you definitively whether this was the cause.
Cause 3: the burner or the media is obstructed
Fire glass, lava rock, spiders and rain all end up in places that matter.
Media over the ports. If glass or rock has settled into the burner ports, gas cannot come out evenly, and the flame becomes patchy and easy to blow out. Manufacturers specify how the media should sit and how deep it should be, and more is not better.
Spiders and insects. Small insects genuinely nest in gas orifices and venturi tubes, and it is a well-known enough problem that many appliances ship with screens. A partially blocked orifice produces a weak or yellow flame that will not hold.
Water. A pit left uncovered fills with rain, and water in the burner pan does not evaporate on command.
Cleaning per the manual is user maintenance. Removing or drilling an orifice is not.
Cause 4: actual wind, and what a guard does about it
Now the wind, which is real, and narrower than the marketing.
A propane fire pit's flame sits on a burner in an open bowl. Moving air does two things: it physically pushes the flame away from the ports, and it disturbs the gas-air mixture at the point of combustion. A guard, which is typically a clear panel around the burner, addresses both by creating a still zone directly above the burner.
What it does well: stops a steady light breeze from blowing the flame off the ports, keeps the flame vertical so it looks the way it is supposed to, and reduces heat being carried sideways.
What it does not do: protect you from gusting or swirling wind, which comes over the top; make the appliance safe to use in strong wind, which no accessory does; or fix any of causes 1 through 3.
And the important condition: use only a guard specified for your model. Fit matters, because a guard that sits wrong changes the airflow the burner was designed around, and a poorly fitting one can make combustion worse rather than better. Glass in the wrong place near a flame is also a breakage question. If your manufacturer sells one for your pit, that is the one to buy.
The siting fix, which costs nothing
Before buying anything, look at where the pit is. A pit in a corner, in a gap between buildings, or at the end of a fence line often sits in a wind channel that the rest of the yard does not have. Moving it a few feet, while still meeting every clearance requirement, changes the airflow completely.
Do not solve wind by moving it closer to a wall, which trades one problem for a worse one.

- Check the tank weight and try a full one on a cold evening. Free, and definitive.

When to stop
If the flame is yellow and sooty rather than weak, that is a combustion problem rather than a wind problem, and it is a different article and a more serious one.
