The four fuels, worst attribute first
Wood
What it is bad at. Smoke, and there is no version of a wood fire that does not produce it. Sparks, which is why wood pits carry the largest clearance requirements and why spark screens exist. Ash, which you have to remove. Storage, because you need somewhere dry to keep seasoned wood. And local rules: open burning is the fuel category most likely to be restricted where you live, and restrictions often tighten seasonally during dry spells.
What it is good at. The fire people actually want. Real flame, real heat output, the sound and smell. No fuel cost if you have wood. No tank to run out mid-evening.
Buy it if you have space, no burn ban, neighbors who are not immediately downwind, and you genuinely enjoy tending a fire. That last one is not a joke: wood is the fuel that requires participation.
Propane
What it is bad at. It looks like a fire and behaves like a gas appliance. The flame is uniform and, to most people, obviously not wood. The tank is a bulky thing you have to hide, refill and store, and storing it is its own set of rules: outdoors, upright, never in a basement or a closed garage, and never indoors. Wind is a real weakness, and a propane pit that will not stay lit in a breeze is a common complaint rather than a defect. Cost per evening is not nothing.
What it is good at. Instant on, instant off, which in practice is the difference between using it on a Tuesday and not. Almost no smoke, which matters on a small lot. No ash. It is the fuel most likely to be permitted where wood burning is not, though that is a question for your own authority rather than an assumption.
Buy it if the yard is small, the neighbors are close, or you want a fire on a weeknight without a project attached.
Natural gas
What it is bad at. It is not portable, at all, ever. And the connection is not homeowner work. Running a natural gas line to a fire pit is licensed work in essentially every jurisdiction, and this article does not describe it. You are hiring a licensed gas fitter or plumber, you are probably pulling a permit, and the installed cost is a real number that has nothing to do with the price on the fire pit's box. Get that quote before you buy the pit, not after.
What it is good at. Never runs out, no tank, lowest running cost of the gas options, and permanently installed so it looks like part of the yard rather than a thing parked in it.
Buy it if you already have natural gas at the house, you are staying put, and you have priced the installation.
Gel and ethanol
What it is bad at. Very little heat, which surprises buyers. Fuel cost per hour is high. Refueling a hot burner is the specific hazard in this category and the manufacturer's instruction on cooling before refueling is not optional. The flame is small.
What it is good at. No smoke at all, no tank, no gas line, no ash, and the smallest footprint. On a balcony or a tiny patio where nothing else is allowed, it may be the only option that is.
Buy it if the space is tiny and the goal is atmosphere rather than warmth. And check your building's rules first, because balconies are frequently where fire restrictions bite hardest.
The specification that actually decides the outcome
Every comparison page argues about BTU. On a fire pit, the number that decides your experience is usually where it can go, and the second is how heavy it is.
Clearance requirements are set by your local authority, not by the seller, and they differ by fuel. A wood pit typically needs substantially more distance from a structure than a gas one. That distance is the real constraint on a small lot, and it is the reason a well-chosen propane pit beats a badly sited wood one every time.
Weight matters because a light pit is a pit that moves, and a moving fire is the thing to avoid. It also determines whether you will ever put it away, which is a bigger factor in how long it survives than the material it is made of.
What the sellers will not tell you

- Look up and then look up again. Branches, an eave, a pergola, a soffit. Overhead clearance is the one people forget.
