No outdoor furniture material wins. Each one fails in a specific, predictable way, and the useful question is which failure you can live with. Teak is expensive and goes gray. Acacia is the cheapest real wood and has the shortest life outdoors. Powder-coated steel rusts, and it starts at the welds and the scratches. Aluminum does not rust but is light enough to travel in wind. HDPE poly lumber survives almost anything and is heavy and hot in the sun. Resin wicker is a plastic skin over a frame, and the skin is what ages. Pick the failure that matches your climate, your storage and how often you will move the chairs.
Why every page you have read disagrees
Search this and page one is furniture brands, teak importers, HDPE manufacturers and cover companies. Every one of them ranks the material it sells at the top of the list. That is not dishonesty exactly, it is the structure of the industry: nobody who sells one material is in a position to write the paragraph explaining what it is bad at.
Independent testing outlets, consumer bodies and forums are almost entirely absent from this SERP. There is no referee. So the lifespan figures you have seen quoted, the confident spans of years, all come from the people whose product is being praised.
We do not sell furniture, and the honest version of a comparison is a list of weaknesses. That is the same shape as the site's own equipment reviews, including the one asking whether lawn sweepers really work, where the answer is a qualified yes with the conditions attached.

The lifespan numbers, and why we are not repeating them
You will have seen spans of years attached to each of these. We are not going to print them, because we cannot name a body that measured them.
There is a neutral reference for wood, and it is worth knowing about: the USDA Forest Products Laboratory's Wood Handbook classifies heartwood by approximate relative resistance to decay, in bands rather than years. Two things in it change how the teak marketing reads.
First, the classification separates teak into two entries by growth type: old growth sits in the highest resistance band, and young growth sits one band lower, in the moderately resistant group. Nearly all teak furniture sold today is plantation grown, which is the second entry, not the first.
Second, the classification is about heartwood. Sapwood, the outer wood of any species, does not carry the same decay resistance. A board's performance therefore depends on which part of the tree it came from, and that is a fact about the individual piece of furniture rather than about the species.
Neither of those is a number of years, and that is the point. A durability class tells you how a species behaves relative to others under decay pressure. It does not tell you how long a chair lasts on your patio, because your patio is a variable.
What actually decides how long your set lasts
The same chair, in two yards, in two climates, has two different lives. These are the variables that do the deciding, and none of them is on a spec sheet.
Standing water and drainage. Wood and hollow steel both fail fastest where water sits and cannot leave. Furniture on a slab that drains is in a different environment than furniture on a slab that ponds, and hollow metal legs with no drain hole hold water inside where you cannot see it.
Ultraviolet hours. Full southern sun does to resin, plastic and finish what shade does not. A set on a covered patio and the identical set in the open are not the same purchase.
Freeze and thaw. Water in a joint or a crack that freezes expands. This is what turns a hairline check in a board into a split, and it is why the same acacia set behaves differently in a cold climate than in a mild one.
Salt. Coastal air attacks aluminum by pitting and finds every break in a steel coating faster. If you are near the sea, that fact outranks the material rankings on page one.
Whether you actually put it away. Off-season storage does more for outdoor furniture than any coating does, which is the same finding we reached about storing a tow-behind lawn sweeper rather than leaving it out. The problem is that a garage is usually full, and a set you cannot store is a set that will be judged on how it survives outdoors.
The specifications nobody publishes
For all the material comparison on page one, five things that genuinely predict how a set performs are almost never stated in a listing.
The weight of a chair. This decides whether your furniture ends up in a neighbor's yard after a storm, and whether you will ever move it to mow. It is the single most useful number in the category and it is routinely absent.
Whether the frame is welded or bolted. A welded steel frame is stronger and gives corrosion a place to start. A bolted frame can be tightened when it loosens, and gives water a fastener hole to sit in. Both are legitimate; the listing rarely says which you are getting.
What the fasteners are made of. Stainless hardware in an aluminum or wood frame is a different product than plated steel hardware, and it is the fasteners that usually stain first.
The species, for wood. "Acacia" is a genus with many species and plantation material varies. A listing that names no species is telling you the species was not a selling point.
Whether it is heartwood. As above, this is the difference the durability classification actually turns on, and no retail listing we have seen states it.
The question that outranks the material
Here is the part the category will not lead with. For most buyers, the material decision matters less than two others: how many seats you will genuinely use, and whether you have anywhere to put the set in the off season.
A six-seat dining set bought by two people is six chairs of weathering exposure and six chairs of storage problem, in exchange for four seats used twice a year. Buying a smaller set in a better material usually beats buying a larger set in a worse one, for the same money.
That is a cost-per-year-of-use argument rather than a materials argument, and it is the same arithmetic we ran on renting versus buying a lawn aerator. Divide the price by the number of times the thing will actually be used, honestly, and the ranking changes.
Choosing, in one pass
- Windy, exposed yard: weight is the specification. Powder-coated steel, wrought iron or HDPE. Aluminum will move.
- Coastal: avoid ferrous metal, and expect pitting on aluminum. Wood and HDPE handle salt air better.
- Hot, high-sun patio: metal and dark HDPE get hot to sit on. Wood does not.
- No storage at all: HDPE and teak accept being left out with the least intervention. Acacia and resin wicker do not.
- You want it to look new in five years: that is a refinishing commitment on any wood, or it is HDPE. Nothing else in the list keeps its factory appearance without work.
- Cold winters with hard freezes: anything that can hold water in a crack or a hollow section is on notice.

Its real weakness outdoors is weight, because a chair light enough to carry easily is light enough to move in wind.
Is HDPE poly lumber furniture worth it? It solves the decay problem completely, keeps its color because the color runs through the material, and needs no refinishing. The trade is that it is heavy to move and stores badly, dark colors get hot in direct sun, and long unsupported spans can sag over time. If you have nowhere to store furniture in winter, that trade is usually a good one.
