Pyramid vs Mushroom vs Tabletop Patio Heater: Which Tips?

Tabletop units are the hardest to knock over and warm the fewest people. Full-height pyramid and mushroom heaters warm a real group and are both top-heavy by design, because the heat has to come from above head height. So the shape question is genuinely a trade between reach and stability. But the thing that decides whether a windy evening ends badly is not the silhouette. It is three checks: whether that specific model has a tilt shutoff that cuts the gas when it goes over, whether the spot you have chosen meets the clearances in its manual, and whether you have accepted that this is an outdoor appliance with no indoor, garage or enclosed-porch version of itself.

Start here, because this one burns fuel

A propane or natural gas patio heater produces carbon monoxide. It is colorless, odorless, and it gives no warning at all before it makes someone confused, which is the point at which they stop being able to help themselves.

The US Consumer Product Safety Commission warns that gas-fired radiant heaters operated in small, poorly ventilated enclosed areas such as a tent or trailer present a carbon monoxide poisoning hazard that can cause death. The International Fire Code prohibits portable outdoor gas-fired heating appliances inside any occupancy while connected to the fuel container, inside tents, canopies and membrane structures, and on exterior balconies.

There is no partly enclosed version of this rule. A garage with the door open, a screened porch, a gazebo with the sides zipped down and a tent are all the same answer, and it is no. If the heater is not warming the space enough, the sequence that follows is almost always that somebody closes the space in around it, and that is the sequence the two authorities above are describing. Electric infrared heaters have no combustion and no combustion gases, which is why they are the ones named in guidance for anything approaching an enclosure.

What each shape actually does with the heat

All three are radiant appliances. Radiant heat travels in straight lines from the emitter to whatever it strikes, and it falls off sharply with distance. That single fact explains the whole shape comparison.

Two of these are commonly sold on the same specification number, and it will not tell them apart. Emitter shape, reflector and height decide that, and they are not on the box.

Which ones tip, and why

A full-height heater puts the burner, the reflector and often the entire heat assembly at the top of a pole, with a cylinder in the base doing the work of holding it down. That is an inherently top-heavy object, and it is top-heavy for a good reason: heat radiated from waist height would be aimed at people's legs.

Pyramid heaters concentrate the problem, because the glass tube adds height and visual mass without adding much to the base. Mushroom heaters are top-heavy too, and their dome presents a wide surface for wind to push on. Tabletop units sit low and short, which is why they are the stable ones and also why they warm one table.

Wind is the usual cause, and the failure is rarely dramatic on the way down. It is the aftermath that matters: a heater on its side, still burning, next to cushions, a cover, a table or a fence. That is the hazard this article exists for, and it is the same reasoning that governs how far a fire pit has to be from the house. A heat source that stays where you put it is a manageable object. One that moves is not.

The tip-over shutoff: check for it, do not assume it

This is where the shopping pages go quiet. A tilt or tip-over shutoff is a device that cuts the gas flow when the appliance leans past a set angle. It is not decoration and it is not universal, and the only way to know your model has one is to look for it in that model's manual and on its certification label.

The fire code is explicit about what a compliant appliance looks like. The International Fire Code requires portable outdoor gas-fired heating appliances to be listed and labeled in accordance with ANSI Z83.26 / CSA 2.37, the standard for gas-fired outdoor infrared patio heaters, and requires a tilt or tip-over switch that automatically shuts off the flow of gas when the appliance is tilted more than 15 degrees from vertical. It also requires the heating element or combustion chamber to be permanently guarded against accidental contact.

Two honest caveats. First, those code provisions bite where a fire code is enforced, which means restaurant patios, event spaces and public assembly, not a private backyard nobody inspects. They are still the clearest published description of what a safe example of this appliance looks like, which makes them a buying checklist even where they are not law for you. Second, the text of ANSI Z83.26 / CSA 2.37 itself sits behind a paywall, so we cannot tell you clause by clause what it requires. What we can tell you is that the code names it, that it is the mark worth finding on the label, and that a heater carrying no recognizable certification mark at all has told you something.

Treating an advertised feature as a verified one is how buyers get caught out across this whole category. It is the same habit we picked apart in whether a smokeless fire pit actually works, where the performance is real but only under conditions nobody states on the box.

And a tilt shutoff is a last line, not a permission. It stops the gas. It does not stop a hot steel assembly from landing on a cushion.

Standing it somewhere it will not go over

The manufacturer's instructions govern your appliance, and they beat anything on this page. Within that:

Use the base the way the maker intended. Many freestanding heaters have a base designed to be weighted, commonly with sand or water, and the manual says which and how much. Adding weight the manual does not describe, or hanging weight off the pole, changes the appliance in ways nobody has tested.

Put it out of the wind rather than fighting the wind. A corner sheltered by a wall on two sides, still open overhead and to the sides, is worth more than anything you can bolt on.

Respect the clearances, and use the manual's numbers. For the appliances the fire code covers, the published figures are not less than 5 feet from buildings, not beneath or closer than 5 feet to combustible decorations and combustible overhangs, awnings, sunshades or similar attachments to buildings, and not within 5 feet of exits. Your manual states its own clearances, separately for the sides and for the top, and they vary between models. If the spot you had in mind does not meet them, the spot is the problem.

Bring it in before the weather, not during it. If wind is forecast, shut the appliance down, close the cylinder valve and move it or lay it down flat and unlit somewhere it cannot roll. Store the cylinder outdoors and upright, never in a basement or a living space.

If one goes over while it is lit

Do not try to stand a burning heater back up. Get people away from it first, especially anyone seated next to it.

If the cylinder valve is safe to reach without putting yourself over or beside the flame, close it and let the appliance burn out the gas in the hose. If it is not safe to reach, if anything nearby has caught, or if you are not certain, leave it and call the fire service. A propane cylinder involved in a fire is not a situation to manage with a garden hose.

Afterwards, do not relight it because it looks fine. A heater that has been on its side may have a damaged emitter, a cracked glass tube, a strained hose or a disturbed connection, and the parts that matter are not all visible.

Nothing here is a repair guide, and this is deliberate. The gas connection, the hose, the regulator, the cylinder valve and the tilt switch itself are the manufacturer's territory and a qualified person's. Do not repair, extend, substitute or bypass any of them, and do not run an appliance with a hose or regulator that is not the one specified for that model. If a heater will not stay lit, will not shut off, smells of gas or has visible damage, it goes out of service until someone qualified has looked at it.
