A leaf vacuum has an engine driving an impeller. Suction is independent of traction, but the intake is narrow, so it covers ground slowly.

A leaf mulcher or shredder is usually stationary. You bring material to it. It reduces volume and produces something compostable. It is a processor, not a collector.

A standalone mulcher does the same job for material you have already gathered. It does not pick anything up. You still need a rake, a sweeper or a tarp to get the leaves to it.

So a mulcher is only worth owning if you have somewhere for the output to go: a compost pile, a bed you mulch every fall, a bin you are trying to fill fewer times. If your leaves go to the curb whole, a mulcher earns nothing. That is a genuinely common outcome and no page selling mulchers will say it.

Mulchers also carry a real hazard that a sweeper does not. There is a spinning line or blade at the bottom of a feed chute. Never reach into a chute, never run one with a guard removed, and never modify the feed opening.

If you already own a bagger, what does a sweeper add?

A bagger collects while you cut. That sounds like it makes a sweeper redundant, and for grass clippings it largely does.

For leaves it does not, for one structural reason: a bagger routes material through a chute, and a chute is a constriction. Heavy leaf loads pack that chute. The fuller the bag gets, the less airflow there is to carry material through, so a bagger tends to clog exactly when there are the most leaves on the ground.

A sweeper has no chute. The brush throws material over an open lip into an open hopper. It has the opposite failure mode: it does not clog, it simply stops picking up when it loses traction.

The practical answer: if you are collecting clippings during the growing season, the bagger is fine and you do not need a second machine. Yard size sets how much ground you have to cover, which sets the sweep width worth paying for. It is the easy variable, and it is the one every buying guide leads with.

Tree type and canopy set the volume and the material. Six mature oaks on a quarter acre drop more than an open half acre with two ornamentals. Pine needles, acorns and twigs behave differently from broadleaf litter.

What happens to the leaves afterward is the variable nobody asks about, and it changes the answer completely. If they go to the curb whole, volume reduction is worthless to you and a sweeper's big hopper is the win. If they go to a compost pile or back onto beds, shredding is worth a lot and a vacuum or mulcher earns its place.
