Mostly, no. A lawn sweeper on wet grass loses most of its pickup, and it is not because the machine is worn out or badly made. A sweeper has no engine. Its wheels turn the brush, so traction is its power supply. On wet grass the wheels slip, the brush slows down, and it stops throwing material over the hopper lip. A second problem stacks on top: a wet leaf lies flat and bonded to the grass, so even a fast brush skates over it.

How a lawn sweeper is powered, and why that is the whole story
Pick the machine up at the back and the answer is right there. There is no motor.
On a push or tow behind sweeper, the wheels are the engine. As they roll, a gear or belt drives the brush shaft, and the brush spins at a speed proportional to how fast the wheels are turning. The bristles sweep down, catch material, and flick it up and back over a lip into the hopper.
Every part of that chain depends on the wheels gripping the ground. That is not a design flaw, it is what makes a sweeper quiet, fuel free and nearly maintenance free. It is also the reason the machine has one hard weather limit that no amount of technique gets around.

Failure one: wheel slip kills brush speed
This is the failure people notice first, and it looks alarming. The brush turns for a few feet, then hesitates, then stops while you are still moving forward.
On wet grass the tires lose grip. The wheels keep rolling because the machine is being pushed or towed, but they slip against the surface instead of rotating cleanly, and the drive that depends on that rotation slows or stalls. Owner threads on My Tractor Forum and LawnSite report the same pattern repeatedly, and it is one of the most common complaints about tow behind units.
Wet grass is not the only thing that causes it. Damp matted clippings pack into the brush and around the wheel hubs and add drag, and a brush set too low does the same thing. Those causes are worth ruling out on a dry day, and we walk through them in why a lawn sweeper brush stops spinning.
But on a genuinely wet lawn, nothing on the machine is wrong. You have removed its power source. It will come back when the grass dries.
Failure two: a wet leaf will not let a bristle under it
The second problem is quieter and it is the one people misdiagnose as a worn brush.
A dry leaf sits on top of the grass with air under it and a curled edge. A bristle catches that edge and lifts. A wet leaf is a different object. It flattens, it bonds to the grass blades by surface tension, and it presents no edge at all. The bristle tip skates across the surface of it.
This is a grip problem, not a power problem, and the two do not respond to the same fix. Slowing down helps wheel slip a little. It does nothing for a leaf that is stuck flat. This is why a sweeper that is running perfectly well on a damp morning can still leave a stripe behind it.
It is also why manufacturers and retailers consistently advise waiting for dry conditions rather than adjusting anything. There is nothing to adjust. How wet is too wet: a ten second check before you hitch up
You do not need a moisture meter. You need one hand and about ten seconds.
Walk out and put your palm flat on the lawn for a count of three. If your palm comes up visibly wet, the sweeper will slip. If it comes up cool and barely damp, you are in the marginal zone and it is worth a test pass. If it comes up dry, go.
Then pick up a single leaf. If it lifts cleanly, the brush will get under it. If it clings to the grass and tears rather than lifting, the brush will skate over it no matter what the wheels are doing.
Those two checks map exactly onto the two failures above, which is the point. One tells you about traction, one tells you about grip. If either fails, you are collecting less than you think you are, and you will be going over the same ground twice.
Morning dew is the usual culprit. Most owners find early afternoon is the reliable window in fall, once the sun has been on the grass for a few hours.
What actually helps, and what only looks like it helps

The last row is the one worth sitting with. This is not a quality tier you can buy your way out of. Any sweeper whose brush is driven by its own wheels behaves the same way in the wet, and that includes premium tow behind units.
Damp versus soaked: the one case worth trying
There is a middle band where it is genuinely worth a test pass.
Damp means dew that has mostly burned off, or a light overnight shower on a lawn that drains well. Leaves are heavier but they are not bonded flat. Traction is reduced but present. A sweeper will pick up less than it would on a dry day, and it will need slower, more overlapping passes, but it will do useful work. Several manufacturers describe performance on damp material as acceptable while advising against wet lawns outright.
Soaked means standing moisture, a lawn that squelches, or leaves that have been rained on and left for days. Do not bother. You will slip, you will pack material under the machine, and you will finish having cleared very little.
There is a maintenance cost to pushing through, too. Wet material packs into the brush, around the hubs and inside the hopper, and it stays there. That packing is the same buildup that causes drag and pickup problems the next time out.
One safety point, and it applies whatever the weather. If material packs and you need to clear it, stop the tow vehicle, take the key, and unhitch or secure the sweeper before your hands go anywhere near the brush or hopper. Can I use a lawn sweeper on wet grass at all? On damp grass, yes, with reduced results and slower passes. On genuinely wet grass, no. The wheels lose the traction that drives the brush, so the machine stops collecting even though it is still rolling.
Will a heavier or more expensive sweeper handle wet leaves better? No. The limit comes from the wheel driven design that every sweeper in this class shares. Adding weight does not fix it, because the problem is grip at the tire, not pressure at the brush.
