Lawn Sweeper Brush Not Spinning? Fix It in Order

If the brush turns for a while and then stops, the cause is almost always drag, not a broken part. Packed grass in the brush, debris in the wheel hubs, or a brush set too low all add resistance. Because a sweeper's wheels drive its brush, added resistance means the wheels slip instead of turning, and the brush stalls. The fix most owners reach for, lowering the brush, makes it worse.

That last sentence is the useful one, and it is not written down anywhere obvious. Poor pickup feels like the brush is not reaching, so people lower it, which increases drag, which reduces traction, which slows the brush further. It is a loop, and it is why a sweeper can get progressively worse over one afternoon.

Before you touch anything

Stop the tow vehicle and take the key out. If the sweeper is hitched, unhitch it or chock it so it cannot roll. Every check below assumes the machine is stationary and cannot move.

Do not remove a guard, a hopper catch or a hitch pin to get better access, and do not run the machine with any of them off. They are there because a brush shaft and a hitch are both things that catch clothing and fingers. If a check requires disassembly beyond removing the hopper bag, that is a workshop job with the manufacturer's manual open, not a job in the middle of a lawn.

Work gloves are worth putting on. Packed material around a brush shaft usually contains twigs, and sometimes wire and glass.

First, tell the three symptoms apart

These get lumped together as "it stopped working" and they have different causes.

Watch the brush from the side for one slow pass before you diagnose anything. Most people have never actually looked at it while it works, and thirty seconds of watching tells you which column you are in.

The drag loop: why lowering the brush makes it worse

Here is the mechanism, because once you see it the ordering of everything below makes sense.

A sweeper's brush is driven by its own wheels. The tires grip the ground, the wheels rotate, gearing multiplies that rotation, and the brush spins. Traction is the power supply, and anything that adds resistance at the brush is a load on that supply.

Lower the brush and the bristles press harder into the turf. That is more resistance. More resistance needs more grip to overcome, and there is only so much grip available from a tire on grass. Past a certain point the wheels start slipping, and a slipping wheel drives the brush slower than a rolling one.

So the intuitive fix makes the machine worse in exactly the way the owner is trying to fix. Owners on My Tractor Forum and Tractor Forum describe this repeatedly: brushes set too low cause the wheels to stick and the brush to stop.

The correct first move on poor pickup is usually to raise the brush one notch, not lower it. Set it so the bristle tips just contact the tops of the grass. They should flick material, not scrub the soil.

Check in this order

Fastest and most likely first. Most machines are fixed by step two.

  1. Empty the hopper. A full hopper adds weight and back pressure, and material stops going over the lip. This is the most common cause and the least interesting one.
  2. Clear the brush. Packed grass and leaf mat wrapped around the brush shaft is the single biggest source of drag. Pull it off by hand with the machine stationary. Do this every session in fall, not once a year.
  3. Clear the wheel hubs and axle. Grass and dirt build up in the hub and around the axle and either add friction or lock a wheel outright. Owners on LawnSite trace intermittent wheel lock to exactly this, plus worn bearings.
  4. Check the brush height. Raise it one notch and take a test pass. If pickup improves, you were too low. Repeat until it stops improving.
  5. Look at the bristles. Flattened, splayed or shortened bristles cannot reach material no matter how the height is set.
  6. Check bolt tension on the brush shaft. Too tight binds the shaft, too loose lets it wobble out of engagement. Snug, with the shaft turning freely by hand, is the target. Do not torque it down.
  7. Turn the brush by hand. It should spin freely with light resistance. Grinding, catching or a hard stop means a bearing or the drive, and that is where this checklist ends.
  8. Slow down. If material is packing underneath rather than going up, you are covering ground faster than the brush can clear it.

Brush height, and re-checking it after new bristles

Brush height is the most useful adjustment on the machine and the least used. Most models have a lever, a dial or a set of pin holes that raises and lowers the brush relative to the ground, and many are tool free.

Set it with the machine on the surface you will actually sweep, not on a driveway. Grass compresses under the wheels and a setting made on concrete will be too low on turf.

The target is contact, not pressure. The bristle tips should just brush the tops of the grass and flick material rearward. If you can see the bristles bending hard and dragging, you are too low, and you are trading brush speed for a scrubbing action that does not help.

Re-check the height after replacing bristles. New bristles are longer than the worn ones they replaced, so a setting that was correct last season is too low with a fresh brush. When the brush is genuinely finished

Bristles wear, and a worn brush is not a fault you can adjust around.

The signs are consistent: bristle tips splayed outward rather than straight, visible shortening compared with a new row, sections where bristles have snapped off leaving gaps, and a machine that leaves a striped pattern matching those gaps. If raising and lowering the brush changes nothing, and the drive turns freely, the bristles are the answer.

Owner discussions note that brushes need enough length to reach the turf at all, and that a set worn past that point cannot be recovered by adjustment. Replacement bristle sets are a standard part for most models.

Buy the brush set your model's parts diagram specifies. Bristle length and mounting pattern are model specific, and this is the point to read your own manual rather than a generic figure from a web page. We have not tested aftermarket bristle sets and will not tell you they are equivalent.

When to stop and order a part

There is a line past which this stops being adjustment and becomes repair.

Stop and go to the manufacturer's parts diagram if the brush will not turn freely by hand, if you hear grinding from a bearing, if a drive gear has visible missing or rounded teeth, if a belt is glazed, cracked or shredded, or if a wheel will not rotate after the hub is clean.

None of those are field fixes and none of them should be worked around. Do not remove a guard to keep using a machine with a failed drive, and do not defeat a hitch pin or a hopper catch to keep it running. A sweeper is a cheap machine to repair and there is no reason to run one unsafely.
